W.K.U Etiquette

Welsh Karate Union Etiquette

Traditional Karate training would not be complete without the practise of etiquette. This set of rules ensure the Karate practitioner knows how to act in the Dojo (Training Hall)

The Dojo

The Karate dojo is a place of respect and humbleness not only to your Sensei (Instructor) & Sempai (Assistant) but also your fellow students.

  • Arrive for your lesson if possible 15 minutes before the lesson starts in order to stretch and warm up before the class.
  • When entering or leaving the dojo you are to bow as a symbolic gesture of humility and respect.
  • All out door footwear must be removed (where possible) before entering the dojo.
  • All jewellery to be taken off before training commences.
  • When called to line up get into line quickly in your grade order.
  • Should you need to leave at any time during the lesson get the instructor’s attention, bow then leave walking behind the other students.
  • When returning to the class, bow and sit on your knees by the side of the class or near the entrance and wait for the instructor to bow you back into the lesson.
  • Food should not be eaten in the dojo.
  • There is to be no loud or unnecessary noise.
  • Do not swear or use bad language.
  • Never lean against walls or cross your arms when watching a demonstration.
  • Do not ask to be graded as your Instructor is the best person to assess this – when you are ready you will grade.
  • When stopping for the break do not sit on any chairs. If you need to sit, sit on the floor.
  • Students must wear a clean and pressed Gi (karate suit) with a WKU badge on the left breast of Gi top (jacket).
  • Keep toe and finger nails reasonably short and clean.

These rules help establish the right way of doing things, and particularly in children to develop discipline and respect.

Yours respectfully,

Welsh Karate Union
